This project was the result of a first-place finish in an invited competition for a biofueled, combined heat and power plant initiated by a public-private partnership between the city of Stockholm and the energy company, Fortum. Our design is meant to reflect a proud civic building that expresses its role in a modern, environmentally friendly and sustainable energy system. At the same the building is located in an historically sensitive area with expanding working and housing areas around it, and the building’s scale and materiality were used as architectural tools to make the building “a good neighbor. This is done primarily by the stepped massing of the building and a rounded façade structure composed of specially made vertical terracotta elements that wrap the prosaic functional structure. The terra cotta material is in keeping with the existing older brick buildings in the area.
